5 Reasons You Should Use A Water Filter Jug When Making Coffee

It’s easy to overlook the quality of your water when making coffee as so much focus is on the coffee beans and brewing methods. However, water is a key component to your coffee brewing process and different types of water can have huge effects on the taste of your drink.

Depending on whether the tap water you use is hard or soft, this will have an impact on the drink taste due to the mineral (magnesium and calcium) content of the water.

A great way to get better tasting water is by using a water filter jug. This jug will help filter out impurities and excess minerals from your tap water. Here are 5 reasons you should use a water filter jug when making coffee at home:

1. Protect your machine from limescale

Hard water is notorious for leaving limescale on kitchen appliances which can be difficult to remove and often leads to long-term damage.

Using filtered water will reduce the amount of limescale hard water leaves in your machine so you don’t have to descale as often and will help preserve your machine’s internal components.

2. It tastes better

Perhaps the most obvious and most important reason is the fact that using a water filter gives you better-tasting water.

By filtering out impurities and excess minerals your water, and therefore your coffee, you will have a better and purer tasting drink.

3. Better coffee appearance

Using hard water can lead to visible calcium particles forming on the surface of the water which isn’t great when making a heavy water-based drink such as an Americano.

Filtering the water will give you clearer water, free from any ‘bits’ floating on the surface.

4. Consistent taste

When relying on a water filter jug, you can be certain how the water will taste, regardless of any changes in water hardness from your tap.

This is great for fine tuning your brewing recipe by reducing the number of variables.

5. Better than bottled water

One alternative to using a water filter jug is using bottled water. Although this will give you a better quality of water than tap, this can be very costly and also heavily increases your plastic consumption.

With a simple switch from single-use plastic bottles to filtered water, you can make a significant impact on this global plastic epidemic (source).

As a fellow home coffee drinker, I highly recommend using a water filter jug, especially when living in a hard water area. Not only does it taste better than tap water, it also helps protect your machine from limescale.

You can buy water jugs at most supermarkets or online at retailers such as Amazon. I use the Brita Marella which I’ve been impressed with so far.
